Westboro comes to Woodstock

The Religious cult of Hate, Westboro Baptist Church, has found its way to Woodstock, GA.  They plan to ‘peacefully’ incite rage, anger, hate, and to rub salt in the wounds of the family and friends who plan to say goodbye to Spc. Gary Lee Nelson III.  Gary, 20, was killed in a non-combat accident near Mosul Iraq, April 5th.  May he rest in peace.

What the Westboro Clan is doing can be regarded as ‘Free Speech’, however inciting violence does not come without consequence.  Article 1 Section 1 Paragraph 5 of the Georgia Constitution states that no Law shall be passed to curtail or restrain the freedom of speech or the press, but it also adds that those expressing ‘Free Speech’ shall be held responsible for ‘the abuse of that liberty’.

While civilization has ‘advanced’, I am reminded that it was not so long ago that one could challenge another to a duel for grievances that could not be satisfied lawfully.  I can say without fail that if these practitioners of hate and incite ‘protested’ my family member’s funeral I would have no option but to hold them responsible for the abuse of their ‘liberty’ to demean the deceased and defenseless through hate speech.

While I am against the government abrogating ‘Free Speech’ I am not at all divided upon citizens abrogating the intentional and purposeful hate filled interruption of a family’s farewell to their beloved.  Inciting compounded grief is hardly different from yelling “Fire” in a crowded theatre.  They are hiding behind one ‘Right’ in order to abrogate the families’ of fallen soldiers Right to Pursue Happiness by putting their beloved deceased to rest in a respectful and decent manner.

Prudence dictates that one Right cannot be used to Abrogate another.  One cannot claim to be Pursuing Happiness or Free Speech at the expense of another.   GA Code 16-11-39 actually prohibits the intended actions of the Westboro’s.  I just spoke with the Woodstock Police and they stated that they and the County will be doing everything possible to prevent any interruption to SSGT Gary Lee Nelson’s farewell.  They also indicated that the Westboro’s claim to protest every soldier’s funeral and only make it those that are convenient or attention getters.

I mourn for Gary’s life being cut short before he could experience the joys of raising his own family.  I mourn for Gary’s family in their loss, and for the additional spectacle and transgression that the Westboro Baptist Church intends to put them through.

I will be attending so as to help shield the grieving family and friends from the monsters that worship a god of Hate and use one Liberty to abrogate another’s.

Update!

Address of location:
St. Michael the Archangel
490 ARNOLD MILL ROAD
WOODSTOCK, GA  30188

If you can join, please arrive between 9:30 and 9:45 April 15th as the Westboro Baptist Church plans to arrive at around 10:15 am.

Addendum:

On Friday morning the Westboro Baptist Church is planning on a protest at St. Michael’s for the funeral of SSGT. Gary Nelson. Gary was killed in the service of this country. While these protesters have the right to demonstrate on public property, they cannot come onto church property.

We are asking members of the parish and anyone who can from the surrounding community to come out Friday morning and line Trickum and Arnold Mill Roads. If we are standing in place peacefully praying, then they will not have space available to hurt the family with their hate-filled placards, slogans and chants. Their flyer says they will be there at 10:15. If we can be there between 9:30 and 9:45 perhaps we can peacefully deny them access to the immediate area and require them to move their protest away from the church.

WE WILL BE STANDING IN PEACEFUL PRAYER TO SUPPORT OUR FELLOW PARISHONERS AND A FALLEN SOLDIER. The family must deal with their grief and we need to shield them as much as possible from this group. We will be there to honor the sacrifice of this young man. If you can get this information out to other contacts please do so. Law enforcement is aware of the planned protest.

Thank you for your blog. Excellent report!

It is obvious that the Westboro group is trying to defeat the right of free speech with their diatribe and antics. It is a shame that they stoop to such low levels, when the very religion they profess to practice, teaches us to “Love one another”. We need to rise above the base emotions and level that they would have us sink. One day they will have to meet this young man on the other side.

  3. Thankfully the Westboro’s were a no-show. However, Woodstock and folks from afar were not! Update coming, but I just want to quickly say Thank You to all that could make it and all of you who wish you could have. It was really quite meaningful for me to be a part of my community and to see and meet my fellow neighbors and fellow patriots.

SPC Nelson and his family got the Peace, Respect, and Honor befitting a soldier, son, and a neighbor.

They practice their first amendment right right while I practice my second amendment right. This time, number is not the winner.

  5. Jeff says:

Your enemy cannot hurt you by his/her meanness as much as you hurt yourself by failing to love your enemy! Don’t try to kill each other, kill the envy, jealousy, abuse, anger & malice. When you do that, you’ll lose an enemy, find a friend, & please your God! Let love rule! -Bishop Dale C. Bronner
    Pray! Pray! For this family…

They should be ashamed of themselves…a soldier who fought to protect your freedom; really you’re protesting his funeral. Please find something better to do with your time. I’m sure you can find another way to inflate your pocket with the $$$$ of the government you hate! :) It looks to me as if they are more concerned with publicity than their message. Furthermore, who are they to judge– G-d is the judge!!

You should not “hate” either…the message here is to take the higher road and be better than them…hating them does not cancel out the hate they spread….

  8. Dena says:

GOD is LOVE not hate! Shame on the parents of these innocent children. GOD forgives all sin. Let those without sin cast the first stone……I will be praying for the family of this soldier who risk his life for my family to be safe in our country. We all need to exercise our freedom of speech and speak up against these people with no heart or respect for others on such a day of mourning. We need to be praying for these situations because they are only going to get worse. Why are they using the Baptist church name? I don’t remember learning hate at the Baptist Church. Praying!

I will be there! Im home on leave and i’de be honored to stand infront of these wackjobs. I am a Christian and I cant believe that these people are using religion as a cruch to rudely shout their obviously twisted opinions. Shame on theses people and although nobody can truely speak for “The Big Man” Himself, im sure they’ll have their own issues to take up with Him.

  10. Jann says:

Thank you for your serving our country. Prayers to the family.
It’s a sad time when children are exploited to hold signs of such hatred. It speaks volumes for the parents of these children.

Lets send the parents to serve on front line.

Prayers for all our men and women serving.

  11. Anon says:

you should be focusing your efforts on the politicians. The soldiers are just pawns in this real life game of chess!

  12. While I never met Gary, I did have the honor of meeting his mom and grandma at the viewing tonight, and I cannot even begin to say how much this enrages me. I will also be there tomorrow to shield them from these people. I cannot even stand the fact that the very reason they can act like *********** (those represent many words, I will not post) is b/c of him and all the other fallen soldiers they protest. Where has the humanity gone. Regardless of your thoughts on war, or military or whatever they claim is behind it, this family just lost a child…literally a child. If you wern’t able to be there the viewing room was full of toys, a life size replica of the joker, a batman jersey. For the love of God let them morn the loss of their child. None of the rest of it matters, they have lost a child. I will most definately be there tomorrow! See you all there! Thank you for this blog post!

  13. Thank you SSGT Gary Lee Nelson III for your service and your sacrifice.

Thank you to all that can attend to make sure that Gary’s family has the peace they deserve and farewell that he has earned!

Thank you Cherokee County Tea Party for getting the word out.

Waffle House is as good a place to meet as any. See you there.

My son will be leaving for the Army in June. I am very proud of him. This young man gave his life for our freedom. This also gives this “church” the right to say and do stupid things like this. It also gives us the right to protect this family from seeing them. Please come out and support this young mans family.

  15. Erica says:

This is crazy! Let the family mourn in peace and show they’re love for their son. STOP using the lord as an excuse to do what you want, love of God doesn’t work that way. It’s your opinion about our fallen heroes, so keep them to yourselves, no one else wants to hear them….

  16. Anonymous says:

I’ll be there!!!! No one is going to disrespect any of my fallen comrades!!! Not while I am still breathing. Don’t worry Nelson Family, you have one former marine on his way!!!! God Bless your son and if I could give him more I would because we will always be in his debt!!!! and this is the least I can do for him and his family!!!!

    • Dawn Nelson says:

I cannot thank you all enough for the love and support we received during such a difficult time. I am proud to be the Mother of my brave soldier, Spc. Gary Lee Nelson, III. Thank you all – Dawn Nelson

  17. Anita says:

    These people call themselves Christians?????

    • Robin says:

My thoughts exactly sweetie! I cannot believe these people call themselves a “church” let alone “Christians”. It seems to me they’re some kind of sadistic cult. Funny how they forget the ones they a bashing are the same ones who’ve fought for the freedom of speech rights that they just LOVE to exercise! These people sicken me and certainly NOT Christians! I hesitate to even call them Americans.

  18. Terri says:

I will be at the Waffle House at 8:30 at 575 & 92 hopefully gathering people.

  19. Unnamed says:

You all should be ashamed!! These men and wemen are doing there jobs. God would be ashamed of all of you!!!

    • Unnamed says:

God hates sin…not soldiers or America! I would consider it an honor to show my support to the Nelson family! Thank you for your service and sacrifice!

    • Anonymous says:

You really should learn to spell or use grammar correctly. Also these people (and you I assume) do everything within their power to tear this country down and desecrate those who fight for our freedom and way of life, yet they (and again, you) hide behind the constitution. You (done seperating you guys) shield yourselves behind the foundation of the country that you speak out against. You people should really think things through a ittle more. Anyone who knows who you people are know that if our country were to be invaded you would hide behind every soldier you could find. All in all, you are all completely crazy. I can’t wait to see you friday morning.

    • Unnamed says:

My brother proudly served this country these people should be ashamed!! This family does not need to be exposed to such hatred!!!!!
